The Gaza Strip was the target of Israeli strikes on Friday August 5th. Fifteen people were killed, according to the Israeli army. In a provisional report communicated a few tens of minutes earlier, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported eight dead, “including a five-year-old girl”. For its part, the Palestinian armed group Islamic Jihad announced the death of one of its leaders, Tayseer Al-Jabari.

The Israeli army “is hitting the Gaza Strip” and this operation targets the Islamic Jihad organization, the army said. “We’re not done yet”she added, a little later. “The enemy has started a war against our people and we must collectively defend ourselves and our people, we will not allow the policies of our enemy to undermine our resistance”reacted the Islamic Jihad.

The raids come after Monday’s arrest of an Islamic Jihad leader in the occupied West Bank, Bassem Saadi. The Israeli authorities feared reprisal attacks from the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamists of Hamas and where Islamic Jihad is well established. “To our enemies, and particularly to the leaders of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, I would like to insist: your time is running out. The threat [sur le sud d’Israël] will be eliminated one way or another”said Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
