Israel was heavily criticized by the international community after injuring four peacekeepers in 48 hours. Emmanuel Macron considered it unacceptable that they were “deliberately targeted” and warned that France will not tolerate further shooting.

Israel is at the heart of the controversy. In less than 48 hours, four UN soldiers were injured in Lebanon by Israeli army fire. Some of these strikes reportedly hit the headquarters of the Blue Helmets located in Naqoura near the border. Around 10,000 United Nations troops are deployed in southern Lebanon. The UN is concerned about their security, as is the United States, Israel’s main ally.

Gathered in Cyprus for a summit, several leaders expressed their anger, including Italian leader Giorgia Meloni. Emmanuel Macron judged “unacceptable to see UNIFIL troops deliberately targeted by Israeli armed forces”. He adds: “We will not allow this to happen again.”. In a statement, the IDF claims to have warned the UN soldiers before shooting and explains that it was targeting Hezbollah men who would have been nearby.
