Israel says it hit military infrastructure in Syria in response to shooting

Israel struck military infrastructure of the Syrian regime in the province of Daraa (southern Syria) overnight in response to fire launched from Syria, the army said on Wednesday (January 31). “Last night, a number of attacks from Syria towards the southern Golan Heights were identified. In response, defense force aircraft struck military infrastructure belonging to the Syrian regime in the Daraa region.”, announced the army, without giving any indication of possible victims or damage. Israel rarely comments on its attacks in Syria but says it wants to prevent Iran, which supports the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, from establishing itself on its doorstep. The fighting continues in Khan Younes. An AFP reporter traveling with Israeli forces witnessed a destroyed city center, gutted buildings on muddy ground and soldiers sinking into tunnels. Teams from al-Amal hospital reported a shortage of food in the main city in the south of the Gaza Strip.

“Multiple” retaliations promised by Joe Biden after the death of American soldiers in Jordan. Asked about Iran, the American president claimed to hold them “responsible insofar as they supply the weapons to the people who did this.” In this case, these are the fighters who carried out this deadly attack on Sunday in Jordan, very close to the Syrian border.

The UN is alarmed by the suspension of UNRWA funding. “Withdrawal of funds from UNRWA is perilous and would lead to the collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, which would have far-reaching consequences”, warned several heads of several United Nations agencies. The statement comes as 12 countries have suspended funding to the agency, several employees of which are accused by Israel of being involved in Hamas attacks.

Hamas says it is “examining” the proposed ceasefire agreement. The latter results from a meeting organized in Paris last weekend between American, Israeli, Qatari and Egyptian representatives. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, affirmed on Tuesday that Israel “would not withdraw the army from the Gaza Strip” and would not release “thousands of terrorists” Palestinians, in exchange for hostages.
