The attack took place “about three months ago.” The Israeli army announced on Thursday October 3 that it had “eliminated” three senior Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip, where the army has been at war against the Palestinian Islamist movement for almost a year. According to a press release, they are Raouhi Mouchtaha, member of the Hamas political bureau for Gaza, responsible for finances, Sameh al-Siraj, responsible for security affairs of the same body, and, finally, Sami Oudeh, head of the Hamas Internal Security Agency.
“Mouchtaha was one of the most senior Hamas officials and had direct influence on decisions regarding the deployment of Hamas forces”said the army in its press release. The latter was placed in 2015 by the United States on its blacklist of “international terrorists”, with two other senior leaders of the organization: Yahya Sinouar, whom Israel considers to be the mastermind of the October 7 attack, and Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’ armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, several times announced dead by Israel, most recently in August.
Until now head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinouar took over as head of the movement from Ismaïl Haniyeh, after the latter’s assassination on July 31 in Tehran in an explosion attributed to Israel.
Raouhi Mouchtaha and Yahya Sinouar were arrested by Israel in 1988 for “terrorist activity” before being released in October 2011 as part of an exchange agreement of more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners for the release of Franco-Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, detained for five years by Hamas.
