Israel-Iran tensions: an escalation “would be to the disadvantage of everyone”

An escalation of the conflict in the Middle East “would be to the disadvantage of everyone” according to the former head of military mission of the French delegation to the UN, Dominique Trinquand.

In an interview with LCN, the international relations specialist explains that the international community is currently putting pressure on Israel so that it does not respond in Iran.

“For the moment, we have the impression that Israel wants to escalate and is being held back by everyone, including the Americans, who do not want there to be a response from Israel directly in Iran,” he said. he. This will not mean that there will not be an indirect attack on Iranian interests in Iraq or Syria for example, or in Lebanon.”

“[L’escalade] would be to the disadvantage of everyone, he continues. Striking Iran would be an unnecessary provocation in some ways. It is about stopping this escalation which would not lead to anything interesting in the region. The Americans have a phrase that I find excellent. They told the Israelis, ‘Consider that you have won, and stick with that victory.'”

The expert believes that a strike in Iran would not constitute a means of defense on the part of Israel.

“Israel defends its territory and all countries help it defend its territory […] but here we are talking about attacking Iran, he maintains. It’s not the same thing. I remind you that the Iranian strikes came after an Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate.

Iran, for its part, seems to indicate that it does not wish to go further.

“Quite clearly, the Iranians have shown that they do not want to go too far. I give an example, Hezbollah, which is in Lebanon, struck, not in Israel, but on the Golan Heights. [qui] belongs to Israel, but which is almost empty.

“So that means that in a certain way, Iran wanted, for its internal policy, to respond, but immediately said after the attacks that the file is closed, that it responded to an Israeli attack and that that must stop there.”
