Israel | Benny Gantz’s party files bill to dissolve parliament

(Jerusalem) The party of Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war cabinet, tabled a bill on Thursday to dissolve Parliament and hold early elections.

The National Union party (center right) has “submitted a proposed dissolution law (of Parliament). This follows party leader Benny Gantz’s request to move forward as part of a broad agreement to hold elections before October, a year after the “massacre of 7 October, according to a party press release.

Likud, the right-wing party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reacted, affirming that “the dissolution of the unity government is a reward for Yahya Sinouar (leader of Hamas in Gaza Editor’s note), a capitulation in the face of international pressure and a coup fatal to the efforts to free our hostages.”

The National Union Party joined Netanyahu’s government shortly after the unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7, which sparked the war in the Gaza Strip.

Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, both former army chiefs, have since been members of the war cabinet.

The next legislative elections are scheduled for October 2026.
