(Tel Aviv) American President Joe Biden exonerated Israel on Wednesday, after the deadly strike against a hospital in Gaza which raised a wave of revolt in the Middle East, and obtained from his ally bruised by an unprecedented attack a green light for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Having come in person to support his ally struck by the bloody attack launched on October 7 by Palestinian Hamas, Mr. Biden took up the version given by the Israeli army on this strike, which accuses Islamic Jihad, another organization Palestinian.
“Based on the information we have had so far, it appears that (the strike) was the result of an out-of-control rocket fired by a terrorist group in Gaza,” said Joe Biden, who claims to have evidence from the Pentagon.
“Israel probably did not do that,” assured a senior European intelligence official, interviewed by AFP, stressing that its services have “serious leads”.

Hamas, the Islamist movement in power in Gaza, accused Israel of being the author of this strike, as did Iran and many Arab countries, where thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Tuesday to denounce the ” Zionist crimes.
Speaking to the press, the American president also indicated that Israel had given the green light for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, thus responding to the request of the American authorities and the international community.
“Food, water and medicine”

« Davantage de tragédie »
Joe Biden a assuré qu’il travaillerait avec Israël pour éviter « davantage de tragédie » aux civils, au douzième jour de la guerre, et alors que la situation dans la bande de gaza, un petit territoire de 362 km2 est « incontrôlable », selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé.

L’eau et la nourriture manquent pour les 2,4 millions d’habitants de la bande de Gaza, privés aussi d’électricité, après le siège imposé par Israël depuis le 9 octobre au petit territoire, pauvre et exigu, de 362 km2, déjà soumis à un blocus terrestre, maritime et aérien depuis que le Hamas y a pris le pouvoir en 2007.
La frappe mardi soir sur l’hôpital Ahli Arab, dans le centre de Gaza, a fait au moins 471 morts parmi des déplacés du conflit qui s’abritaient dans l’enceinte de l’établissement, a indiqué de son côté le ministère de la Santé du territoire palestinien.
« Preuves »
Israël a affirmé mercredi avoir des « preuves » de la responsabilité du Djihad islamique dans la frappe sur l’hôpital.
« Les preuves, que nous partageons avec vous tous, confirment que l’explosion dans un hôpital de Gaza a été causée par le tir d’une roquette du Djihad islamique ayant échoué », a déclaré le porte-parole de l’armée Daniel Hagari.
Selon le Djihad islamique, un groupe allié du Hamas, classé comme lui organisation terroriste par les États-Unis, l’Union européenne et Israël, c’est une bombe larguée par un avion de l’armée israélienne qui a causé la tragédie.
« Nous étions en train d’opérer dans l’hôpital, il y a eu une forte explosion et le plafond est tombé sur la salle d’opération. C’est un massacre », a témoigné le Dr Ghassan Abu Sittah, de l’ONG Médecins sans frontières.
Dans une vidéo authentifiée par l’AFP, on voit des flammes s’élever dans la nuit de ce qui semble être la cour d’un bâtiment. Dans l’enceinte de l’hôpital Ahli Arab, un photographe de l’AFP a vu mercredi des véhicules carbonisés, des débris jonchant le sol et une ambulance détruite avec le nom de l’hôpital.
« J’ai vu une énorme boule de feu, l’endroit entier était en feu, des cadavres étaient projetés partout, des enfants, des femmes et des personnes âgées », raconte Adnan al-Nagah, 37 ans, qui s’était abrité avec sa famille dans l’hôpital et a échappé de peu à la mort.
« Journée de colère »
Des milliers de personnes ont manifesté mercredi en soutien aux Palestiniens au Caire, près de l’ambassade d’Israël à Amman, et à Tunis devant l’ambassade de France, l’un des pays accusés d’être des « alliés des sionistes » dans cette guerre.
Des Palestiniens ont aussi manifesté en Cisjordanie, occupée par Israël depuis 1967, aux cris de « Libérez, libérez la Palestine ».
Tant qu’il n’y aura pas de solution au conflit, « on aura plus en plus de cette violence tous les deux ou trois ans », a assuré Ferial, un habitant de Naplouse en Cisjordanie, n’ayant donné que son prénom.
Alors que l’armée israélienne a déployé des dizaines de milliers de soldats autour du territoire palestinien et le long de la frontière avec le Liban, près de 500 000 civils israéliens ont aussi été évacués pour les éloigner des zones de combat, selon l’armée.
Des habitants de villes proches de la bande de Gaza s’organisent pour faire face à la guerre, alors que des roquettes sont encore quotidiennement tirées sur Israël.
La tension est forte aussi à la frontière avec le Liban, où les échanges de tirs sont quotidiens entre l’armée israélienne et le Hezbollah libanais, ainsi qu’en Cisjordanie où au moins 61 Palestiniens ont été tués depuis le 7 octobre, selon les autorités locales.

Le chef de l’ONU Antonio Guterres s’est dit « horrifié » par les « centaines de civils palestiniens tués dans [cette] strike”, which he “strongly condemned”, but without attributing responsibility to anyone.
UNITED STATES
US President Joe Biden, visiting Israel on Wednesday, said he was “saddened and shocked”. He supported the version of the Israeli authorities attributing the strike to Palestinian fighters, emphasizing that American “data” exonerates Israel.

The deadly strike is a “tragedy”, declared Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he hoped for a rapid end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Arab League
The Arab League put its flags at half-mast for three days after “this horrible crime perpetrated by the occupying forces on defenseless people,” announced its number two, Hossam Zaki.
Iran
Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi declared a day of national mourning and accused the United States of being “accomplices in the crimes” of Israel.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of the French and British embassies in Tehran on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, after the gathering of several thousand people in the center of the capital.
Jordan
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the shooting at the hospital, which it blamed on Israel.
Around 5,000 people demonstrated Wednesday near the Israeli embassy in Amman.
Lebanese Hezbollah
Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, called for a “day of anger” on Wednesday and accused Israel of a “massacre”.
On Tuesday evening, in the suburbs of Beirut, clashes broke out in front of the United States embassy between Lebanese security forces and demonstrators chanting “death to America” and “death to Israel”.

Brazil
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva spoke of “an unjustifiable tragedy,” reiterating his call for urgent international action to protect children and civilians.

The World Health Organization (WHO) called on Israel and Hamas to “cease all attacks on health facilities”.
