Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, around a hundred people gathered Monday evening in front of the United States consulate in Montreal to show their support for the Palestinians, the day after the Israeli attack on a refugee camp in Rafah.
The keffiyehs rubbed shoulders with the ponchos at the intersection of Stanley and Sainte-Catherine streets, in downtown Montreal, under the gaze of a few police officers, who blocked these two streets around 7 p.m.
“It’s just a small sacrifice to come here in the rain when you compare it to what the Palestinians are going through,” said Sally, a protester who also deplores what she sees as “our taxes that fund the war “.
To the sound of traditional Arabic music and a few friendly horns, the demonstrators, stationed in front of the American diplomatic building, attacked “the administration of Joe Biden” which they consider “complicit in a genocide” orchestrated by “the Zionist regime “.
“The Zionist regime [Israël] commits his crimes with complete impunity and with the full support of the United States and Canada […] We are here to say that the Palestinians will continue to resist until they are liberated, from the river to the sea,” we could hear during the speeches.
The demonstration, which was not planned on the calendar, was organized in the last hours, in response to the assault on a refugee camp in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip. “We see that there are a lot of people despite the time, because people are dedicated to this cause,” said Rama, one of the organizers affiliated with Palestinian Youth Movement Montreal.
After a few speeches exclusively in English, the procession marched west, rue Sainte-Catherine. The demonstration remained peaceful.
