Iran is said to be opposed to closer relations between the Jewish state and Saudi Arabia.

“Although we will learn more in the coming days, it is clear that Iran – which finances, trains, aids and supports Hamas – wanted to send a message to Arab countries not to normalize relations with Israel.” , said the spokesperson for the United States Department of State from 2019 to 2021, Morgan Ortagus.

“Iran seeks to destroy peace and stability in the Middle East,” he added.

For his part, the former American ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, who was in Jerusalem on Saturday, also estimated that Iran probably played an important role in Saturday’s attack.

David Friedman recalled that the timing of the Hamas attack – near the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War in 1973 – certainly had symbolic importance.

Saturday’s attacks killed more than 200 Israelis and injured more than 1,000.
