And the municipality of Isle-aux-Coudres is worried about the socio-economic repercussions and hopes for a settlement by then.
The Steelworkers union, affiliated with the FTQ, which represents the 35 workers, sent a notice of indefinite strike to the employer, the Société des traversiers du Québec. The strike should begin July 16 at 6 a.m., unless the parties reach an agreement by then.
Essential services will be provided. The Administrative Labor Tribunal will have to look into the matter by then. There had already been a five-day strike in recent months, and these essential services had then been maintained.
The dispute is mainly about wages.
The collective agreement has expired since March 2020. The last salary increase dates back to April 2019.
Faced with this risk of a strike, the municipality of L’Isle-aux-Coudres “hopes for the rapid resolution of this impasse which has persisted for several years”.
The City says it has confidence in the good faith of the parties in order to find a “satisfactory solution” for all.
It wishes to be able to “maintain a regular service ensuring the mobility of all users of the ferry service and not compromising the socio-economic development of its territory”.
