Les Molières, a key spring event
Since 1987, the Molières have rewarded each year the artists and shows that have marked the previous season. This competition brings together all genres and all theatres, both private and public.
This year, the 34th Molières ceremony will take place on April 24, 2023 at the Théâtre de Paris. Broadcast live on France 3, you can follow it live from 9 p.m. on small screens or via the France Télévisions digital platform.
An evening orchestrated by Alexis Michalik
Alexis Michalik, a key figure in French theater and cinema for several years, will orchestrate this edition as master of ceremonies. Winner of 5 Molières for Edmund, The Circle of Illusionists or The producershe succeeds several renowned masters of ceremony, such as Nicolas Bedos, Alex Lutz and Alex Vizorek.
Did you know ? Alexis Michalik had already been contacted to present the Molières. After years of refusal, he finally agrees to present this ceremony, in 2023. An edition where he does not present a piece, because fully invested in 2022 in the production of his film A love story.
His wish for this 2023 edition? “Try to bring something new” and “try to have a good time, do some entertainment” as reported by SortiràParis.com and Le Figaro. To support him in this difficult exercise, the 40-year-old playwright will be accompanied by Pierre Bénézit, Benoît Cauden, Nicole Ferroni and Laura Domenge. The latter two will have the opportunity to conduct video interviews with the winners, in which they will be able to confide in more detail.
Fun fact: Alexis Michalik asked the winner not to thank more than two people, to keep the same pace throughout the evening. But beware: the winners will also have to tell an anecdote!
The key nominations of the Molières 2023
For this new edition, 19 statuettes bearing the effigy of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin will be awarded by the eponymous association.
The public theater
This year, the Comédie-Française dominates the selection with 11 nominations for five plays. Three members of the Comédie-Française will be competing for the award for Best Public Theater Actor: Denis Podalydès (King Lear), Christian Hecq (The Bourgeois Gentleman) and Laurent Stocker (The Miser).
As for the best public theater actresses, we will have the chance to see Isabelle Huppert compete (The Glass Menagerie), Isabelle Carré (Countryside), Sara Giraudeau (The Bird Syndrome) and Catherine Hiegel (Music Hall).
Did you know ? Isabelle Huppert, named 9 times during her career, has never won this award. Will this 34th ceremony be conclusive?
The private theater
Among the most named shows of the private theater, we find Glenn, birth of a prodigy (6 nominations) on the fate of pianist Glenn Gould and Big Mother (5 nominations), a journalistic thriller about mass manipulation in the age of big data.
We will also have the opportunity to (re) discover the piece I don’t run, I fly! by Élodie Menant, evoking the difficulties encountered by high-level athletes and When the child appearsa comedy with Catherine Frot, nominated for the Molière for the Comédienne in a private Theater show.
The Molières also reward humor!
In terms of humor, Florence Foresti (Boys Boys Boys), Laura Felpin (It passes), Manu Payet (Immanuel 2), Stéphane Guillon (On the scene) could be rewarded in the humor category. We also find several alone on stage, including Coming out of Mehdi Djaadi who talks about his conversion to Catholicism or even Thomas Plays His Wigs – Deluxe Edition with Thomas Poitevin, a humorist very present on social networks.
And the musical performances…
Mythical opera-rock by Michel Berger with leading singers Daniel Balavoine and France Gall, starmania returns to the stage with this new proposal from Thomas Jolly. With two nominations, this musical show is likely to leave with the praise of the jury made up of active professionals from the theatrical world.
Did you know ? Thomas Jolly will be the master of ceremonies for the 2024 Olympic Games.
