European Ecology-The Greens MEP Yannick Jadot said on franceinfo that no EPR “in the world“did not work. If these nuclear reactors have experienced several difficulties, his statement is erroneous.

On franceinfo, Yannick Jadot assures that nuclear technology is faulty. To support his point, he puts forward a shocking argument: “EPRs, there is not one running in the world. No, there’s not one spinning in the world“. The European Ecology-The Greens MEP is wrong. EPRs, or European pressurized reactors, are the third generation of nuclear reactors, designed in the 1990s and supposed to be more powerful and safer than those of the older generation.

Of the four EPR sites, two have been completed. The first, in China, has been in service for three years. There was indeed a sealing problem in one of the two reactors, but the Taishan EPR is currently working. The other completed site is located in Olkiluoto, Finland. Completed in March, it was quickly taken offline for a turbine problem. Of the EPRs built, one out of two is in service, rather than zero, as Yannick Jadot claimed. Beyond the number, it implies that nuclear technology is unreliable. However, it is true that these sites have experienced additional costs and delays.
