On the night of October 29 to 30, we will change the time. A change reintroduced in 1976 with the aim of limiting energy consumption in the midst of the oil crisis. But Between summer time or winter time, which is the most advantageous in terms of energy?

The time change has been dividing for 50 years. On the night of Saturday 29 to Sunday 30 October, we will switch to winter time. Clocks and alarm clocks will go back 60 minutes, an extra hour of sleep. Originally, the time change has been set up to provide less light in the evening. the President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing was looking for to save money after the oil shock of 1976. Since then, this system has made it possible to lower your energy consumption.

Today, changing the time only saves 0.07% of annual electricity consumption according to ADEME, with LED bulbs consuming less than conventional incandescent or halogen bulbs. The important question is that of harmonization between countries and many have opted for summer time. “This is the decision that has just been taken by the United States, which is the largest country to have adopted the time change, and which in 2022 abandoned this measure”, underlines Anna Créti, economist and director of the climate economics chair at the University of Paris-Dauphine. Scheduled for Europe in 2021, the end of this change of pace has been postponed due to the health crisis.
