Dyson’s latest Airwrap i.d. introduces Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for personalized styling routines via the MyDyson app, but comes with a substantial price of 549 euros. Utilizing the Coandă effect, this multi-styler avoids heat damage while delivering impressive performance with a maximum airflow of 17.1 meters per second. Despite its premium design and versatile attachments, the device’s operation can be noisy. Expert evaluations highlight its ease of use, making hair styling more manageable compared to traditional tools.
When Dyson launched the inaugural Airwrap in 2018, it sent shockwaves through the beauty industry: styling hair with air instead of heat? It sounded like sorcery, yet it proved to be surprisingly effective. Fast forward to 2024, and we welcome the third iteration: the Airwrap i.d., now featuring Bluetooth connectivity. However, this innovation comes with a hefty price tag of 549 euros. We put the device through its paces to determine if the excitement surrounding it is still warranted or merely a gust of hot air.
What sets multi-stylers like the Dyson Airwrap apart is the remarkable Coandă effect. This physical phenomenon allows airflow to cling to nearby surfaces, enabling the hair stylers to gently wrap hair around the curling barrel and style it without the damaging effects of extreme heat.
Revolutionary Bluetooth Technology
The Dyson Airwrap i.d. stands out as the only hair styling tool equipped with a smart Bluetooth feature. Simply power on the device and link it to the MyDyson app. From there, you can input details about your hair’s texture, length, and condition. After you choose your desired look, Dyson generates a personalized styling routine that is directly communicated to the device.
Getting Started with the Dyson Airwrap i.d.
Connecting the Airwrap to the MyDyson app is a straightforward process.
We began our session with a robust, warm airflow that smoothly transitioned to a cooler phase after a few moments—this is intended to set your style. The device then enters standby mode, allowing you to concentrate on the next section of hair. Activating the next cycle is as simple as pressing the power button, though you can also use the Airwrap like a traditional styling tool if you prefer.
First Impressions: A Frustrating Start
The Airwrap’s packaging was snug within its shipping box and required careful removal. Inside, we discovered a premium Dyson storage box containing the device and all its accessories. However, we found an additional cardboard insert beneath the lid, which was the only plastic component in the packaging. The rest of the items were wrapped in durable black paper.
Versatile Attachments
The attachments are the heart of the styler: depending on your selected set, different attachments are included. Despite having natural curls, we opted to test the standard Straight+Wavy set. This set features a 40 mm curling attachment, a conical curling attachment, a soft smoothing brush, a drying and flyaway smoothing attachment, a large volume brush, and a standard attachment for quick drying.
The curling attachments are designed for both left and right curls. You can effortlessly adjust the direction at the tip without risking burns. While the curling barrel does heat up, the small dial remains cool enough to touch.
Dyson’s Thoughtful Design
Our set came with five versatile attachments.
The airflow can be adjusted using the flyaway attachment, while the smoothing brush automatically positions its bristles based on the brushing direction, directing airflow downward as you style.
A Closer Look at the Airwrap i.d.
The device itself has a premium feel. Its slightly oval shape makes it comfortable to hold. On the front, you’ll find the on/off switch and two dials to control temperature and airflow, each with three settings. The attachment release switch is conveniently located on the opposite side of the handle, allowing for easy one-handed operation.
The Storage Solution
The classic storage box is thoughtfully divided into two sections: one for the attachments and one for the device itself. The styler even has a designated space with a perfect recess, leaving ample room for the cable. This organization keeps everything tidy and prevents loose parts.
Inside, the box is lined with black velvet, which looks elegant but tends to attract dust and lint. The exterior is wrapped in a stylish purple leather-like material that feels luxurious but is susceptible to stains and scratches. For travel, you might prefer a more practical and compact bag, which Dyson also offers.
Additional Accessories Included
The package also contains a ring-shaped cleaning brush for the filter, cleverly concealed in a separate compartment of the cardboard packaging—a black ring on black cardboard can easily be overlooked. If you think the cleaning brush is missing, take a closer look!
Performance Evaluation
During our tests, we recorded an impressive airflow of 17.1 meters per second at maximum performance, aligning with Dyson’s claim of approximately 13.5 liters per second. Even at the lowest setting, the Airwrap maintains a strong airflow of 10.2 meters per second, competing well with high-quality traditional hair dryers.
Additionally, there are two temperature settings and a cool option, with a maximum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius. On the hottest setting, it reached 85 degrees Celsius, while Dyson claims it can go up to 90 degrees. For context, traditional curling irons can exceed 200 degrees Celsius. Such high temperatures can damage hair proteins, leading to brittleness and dullness. In this case, less is more—provided the style holds up in the end. Notably, the handle remained comfortably cool, measuring 43.6 degrees Celsius after two minutes of continuous use.
Expert Insights: Impressive Results, but Noisy Operation
After initial testing, we took the Airwrap to Daum hair salon in Hamburg to gather professional opinions from master hairstylist Petra Daum and her team. They were eager to explore the capabilities of the Dyson Airwrap.
Professional Assessment of the Dyson Airwrap
Expert stylist Oia conducted the hair styling during our expert evaluation.
After washing the hair, it was treated with a generous amount of mousse. Before styling, Oia ensured the hair was about 80% dry. While the flyaway attachment was somewhat slow, the drying attachment performed admirably.
We tested the conical curling attachment on one side and the cylindrical attachment on the other. With both, the hair effortlessly wrapped around the curling barrels, requiring much less effort compared to a traditional curling iron.
Final Thoughts from the Experts
Oia’s conclusion: “It is definitely much easier to style with the Airwrap.”
