Most French families have chosen to take a cat rather than a dog. The feline has therefore become the No. 1 pet in our country.
Mathilde Guillon is a behavioral veterinarian in Vienne and here is what inspired her to think: I don’t have much space because I live in an apartment, so I take a cat rather than a dog.
- A cat is a living animal that needs interaction with you, certainly it sleeps about 16 hours a day, so there are 8 left during which it will try to get in touch with you.
- Financially would a cat be cheaper than a dog? Apart from a few very large dogs that have special needs (and appetites), you will have to have your cat vaccinated, cared for and also sterilized anyway. Very important, cats left to fend for themselves in the street will themselves generate a number of young and the invasion of space is looming! At present few cats have the chance to share the existence of a human.
- He’s not going to stay in a corner of the apartment and come and give us his purrs on demand. He needs predation and therefore to climb, to have hiding places, so we will have to arrange the apartment for him. If we’re not ready for that: don’t take a cat.
Mathilde Guillon concludes by saying that a cushy dog who has a low need for outings will be almost better off in an apartment than a cat from a farm, used to roaming the countryside.
And then let’s be serious:
if I work long hours every day, have many activities and do not have time to take care of an animal, then the decision is necessary: there is no room in my life for an animal, whatever it is.
