The month of January 2024 was warmer than in the past, it is the 24th consecutive month above seasonal norms. There is warming, but also drought. To anticipate this, some people try to collect rainwater for their own consumption.

Whether for cooking, showering or drinking, at a father’s house, there is no water from the public network, everything comes from the sky or rather from the roof of the house. Two years ago, this former engineer had a 7,000 liter tank buried in his garden to collect and filter rainwater. Cost of the operation: 8,000 euros. Rainwater cannot be drunk as it is. Responsible for air pollution and pollutants present on the roof, it is not drinkable. So, inside the house, there is another series of filters, including activated carbon filters also used in water treatment plants.

Consumption that is not recommended

In his kitchen, there are two taps: water that can be used for cooking and water that he considers drinkable thanks to its filters which remove 99.9% of bacteria. Maintenance that he carries out alone and which also costs him around a hundred euros per year. Collecting rainwater and making it potable, nothing authorizes it, but nothing prohibits it either. Contacted, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) considers that rainwater filtration systems are not always sufficient and specifies that the consumption of filtered rainwater is not recommended.
