Conflict in the Middle East: is Iran Israel’s worst enemy?
(France 2)
On the night of Saturday April 13, Iran launched a major air attack on Israel. Enemies, these two Middle Eastern states were allies in the past. How can we explain the escalation of violence?
According to the ruling ayatollahs, Israel is the adversary of Islam. In the streets, Iranians are calling for the death of the Jewish state. The indirect war between the two countries began on April 1. A strike attributed to Israel destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, beginning the escalation. Tehran had promised revenge. “The evil regime made a mistake. In this regard he must be punished and will be punished“, reacted Ali Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader. Before the air attack of April 13, Iran indirectly attacked Israel by targeting its regional allies, present in particular in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
No direct war
For the first time, Tehran struck Israel head-on, without going through third parties, but the modus operandi seems to be an exception. Countries have never directly attacked each other. According to experts, the two powers have no interest in provoking open conflict. On the other hand, their remote clashes should not stop. Iran is playing the game of a proxy war by using its militias present in the region to strike the Jewish state.
