The presidential election to be held on Sunday May 14 in Turkey looks like a referendum. After 20 years in power, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan finds himself elbow-to-elbow for the first time with an opposition candidate, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu.

For the first time in 20 years, they have hope. In the crowd, some form a heart with their hands, the symbol of opposition to Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “We want democracy, we’ve had enough of this one-man regime”, says a woman. They applaud Kemal Kiliçdaroglu. Aged 74, he brings together a broad coalition, from the far left to right-wing nationalists. He promises to release political prisoners and put an end to the hyper-presidency.

The president maintains the confidence of his electorate

Many women and many young people came to the meeting. The election is a referendum for or against the president. In the markets, inflation has doubled prices, and the minimum wage is 400 euros per month, for 15 euros for a piece of cheese. The president, however, retains the confidence of his electorate. “In 20 years, he has built hospitals, housing, schools, thanks to him we have everything”says one of his supporters.
