Quite a symbol, two years after the death of Mahsa Amini. Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian promised on Monday, September 16, to work to ensure that the morality police do not “disturbs” not women who do not wear the compulsory veil in public, during his first press conference since his election in July. “The morality police are not supposed to confront” women, the reformist president hammered home to the media in Tehran, the Iranian capital.

Massoud Pezeshkian made these remarks two years after the death on September 16, 2022, of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman arrested by the morality police for violating the strict dress code imposed on women in Iran. The head of state had criticized the police in September 2022 for the death in custody of Mahsa Amini and promised to remove the morality police from the streets.

Despite his positions, Massoud Pezeshkian is struggling to convince certain activists, including the Franco-Iranian lawyer Chirinne Ardakani. “It doesn’t matter whether they are reformers or conservatives. [au pouvoir]from the moment when it is the supreme guide, Ayatollah Khomeini, who concentrates all the powers: the judicial power, the power of the media, the executive power”she assured franceinfo.
