Tension continues to rise in the Middle East. Iran, enemy of Israel and supporter of Hamas, threatens to punish the Jewish state after a deadly attack which was blamed on the Israeli army on April 1 in Syria. The strike destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus and killed 16 people, including seven members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic. “The evil regime of Israel made a mistake in this matter. It must be punished, and it will be punished”declared Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.
White House warns Tehran
American President Joe Biden assured Israel of his unwavering support and warned Tehran: “We warned Iran against using this attack as a pretext to continue escalation in the region”, replied Karine Jean-Pierre, the spokesperson for the White House. A US general in charge of the Middle East is in Israel to discuss security threats in the region with the country’s military leaders. The Europeans called for restraint to avoid an escalation.
