Iran summoned the German ambassador on Wednesday, July 24, after banning an Islamic association in Hamburg, suspected of supporting the pro-Iranian Lebanese movement Hezbollah and of spreading an anti-democratic ideology.
A few hours earlier, Germany had banned the entire country Islamic Centre Hamburg (IZH)owner of a major Shiite mosque, as well as its affiliated organizations. “Following the action of the German police which closed a number of Islamic centres, the German ambassador was summoned today to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Iranian diplomacy said in a statement.
Founded by Iranian immigrants in 1953, theThe Islamic Centre Hamburg operates, among other things, the Imam Ali Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, in the northern German metropolis. It has representations in Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt, among others. Following the attack on Israel by the Islamist movement Hamas, of which the pro-Iranian Hezbollah is an ally, on 7 October 2023, German MPs renewed their calls to close the IZH.
