Iran vows to retaliate after raid that killed 13 people in Damascus, Syria, on Monday evening. “The evil Zionist regime will be punished by our brave men, we will make it regret this crime and the others”reacted the Iranian supreme leader, Aytollah Ali Khamenei, Tuesday April 2. “This cowardly crime will not go unanswered”, for his part said Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi, without specifying the nature of this response. Tehran blames Israel for these strikes, which has not yet confirmed its responsibility.

The head of Iranian diplomacy Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also announced that he had sent “an important message” in Washington, through the charge d’affaires of the Swiss embassy in Iran, who represents American interests in the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries. For him, the United States “must be held responsible”, “as supporters of the Zionist regime”.

The strikes, carried out by “six missiles fired by F-35 fighters” according to Tehran, are the first to target an Iranian diplomatic building in Syria, a country in civil war since 2011, where Iran and its allies support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. They destroyed the building housing the consulate and the residence of the Iranian ambassador in the country.
