Investigation underway in Montreal | Ontario police target car thieves

A joint operation by Ontario authorities and Montreal police targeting several car thieves takes place in the metropolis this week

The police operation is expected to last several days and is the result of an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

“An increased presence of officers from the OPP and the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is expected in certain areas of Montreal throughout the week,” reports the Ontario police force in a press release, which does not did not want to confirm whether the investigation was indeed involving criminals linked to car thefts. A report on the operation will be provided on Friday, media relations said.

A mobile command post near an SPVM operational center was clearly visible early Tuesday morning.

Car thefts still remain an issue in the neighboring province: they occur every 40 minutes in Toronto, the Toronto Star.

More than 12,000 vehicles were stolen in the Queen City last year, totaling $790 million, Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw told local media.

An increasingly violent crime, as authorities report 68 carjackings so far in 2024, an increase of 106% compared to the previous year.
