Investigation into a “close personal relationship” | RBC fires its CFO

(Toronto) The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has fired its chief financial officer, Nadine Ahn, following an investigation into a relationship she allegedly had with another employee.

RBC says it recently became aware of allegations involving Mme Ahn and launched an internal review, while consulting external legal counsel to investigate, according to a statement released Friday evening.

The investigation would have revealed that Mme Ahn had a “close, undisclosed personal relationship” with another employee who received preferential treatment, including promotions and pay increases, which violated the bank’s code of conduct.

Mme Ahn and the other employee were both fired following the review.

RBC assures that the investigation would not have found any evidence that the conduct of the two persons targeted would have had an impact on the financial statements, the strategy or the financial or commercial performance of the bank.

Katherine Gibson, who most recently served as RBC’s senior vice-president of finance and controller, has been named interim chief financial officer, effective immediately, while a permanent successor is sought.
