Investigation at Bedford school: audits will be carried out in three other Montreal schools

The investigation carried out at Bedford Elementary School in Montreal, where inadequate educational practices were prevalent, led the Ministry of Education to carry out audits on three other schools in the metropolis.

These are the Saint-Pascal-Baylon (primary), Bienville (primary) and La Voie (secondary) schools, which all report to the Montreal School Service Center (CSSDM). “The audits mainly target the climate within these schools as well as possible interference in governance bodies,” said the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, in a press release.

The minister also released on Friday a devastating investigation report into the situation at Bedford School, where a “dominant clan” of teachers had created “a climate of fear and intimidation”.

Followers of an ultra-conservative vision of education, the latter used “humiliation techniques” with students.

Intimidation techniques

“Investigators reported that certain subjects were not taught or taught very little at Bedford School,” reports the ministry. “Gaps were identified in the teaching of oral communication, science and technology, ethics and religious culture and sexuality education. »

The report convinced the ministry to submit eleven teachers to investigative committees which will notably have to establish whether or not they will be able to keep their teaching certificates.

Two “supporters” will also be sent to the school to develop a plan aimed at resolving internal problems, namely restoring the climate, ensuring the quality of teaching and putting an end to “interference by teaching staff in the management of school”.

The plan must be completed by November 30.

More details will follow.
