Following the scorching summer, the forest find be very weak. Specialists are trying to better adapt it to climate change, for example by planting more resistant trees from abroad.

In a nursery in Guémené-Penfao (Loire Atlantique) there are several species that are currently absent from French forests, but which, in the future, could help to cope with climate change. Warming weakens trees. In Gironde, fires have ravaged dehydrated Landes pines, so scientists are trying to make them more resistant. The strategy : put French and Spanish genes together.

It is urgent, because global warming is faster than the adaptive capacity of forests. The ONF (National Forestry Office) is studying all the solutions, such as planting trees from elsewhere. Young American redwoods have thus resisted the drought. The idea is to implement mosaics. According to experts, in 50 years, half of French forests could be very different from what they are today
