Five years after the mighty The Ballad of the Runaway GirlElisapie suggests Inuktitut, an album of covers, in his mother tongue, of rock songs that filled his youth. A lighter project in appearance, but which has taken on capital importance for the Inuk artist, and which is attracting international attention.
Elisapie is well aware that the direction of this new album risks causing surprises. She herself would never have thought that performing pieces by Metallica, Cyndi Lauper, Pink Floyd or Fleetwood Mac would make her dive so deep within herself.
“I didn’t expect that an album by covers becomes so significant, she confides. But ultimately it’s very, very personal. I have never been so challenged. »
What was shaping up to be a “small project on the side » therefore became big by force of circumstances. This is because the singer-songwriter realized that every time she spoke about a song to her accomplice, the guitarist Joe Grass, who produced the album, she was “on the edge of bawl.” “I told him: “I don’t know what’s happening, I’m experiencing things…”
The cause of this irrepressible emotion? All these songs remind him of his youth “in the North” in Salluit: a state of mind, a person who mattered, a nagging pain, a moment of abandonment in the party. The hypersensitive young girl that she was captured everything about the pain linked to the loss of her bearings, to the suicides, to the traumas of previous generations, and this is what comes up when she hears I Want to Break Free, Going to California Or Wish You Were Here.

J’étais sur mes gardes, je me demandais si je pouvais vraiment raconter ces histoires qui ne sont pas à moi. Mais je n’avais pas le choix. Il fallait aller jusqu’au bout.

Pour Wild Horses, elle évoque par exemple un ami qui écoutait la pièce des Stones pour oublier la maltraitance qu’il avait vécue enfant. Elisapie conclut dans son texte que « la musique a ce don incroyable de réconcilier l’obscurité et la lumière », une phrase qui pourrait résumer l’album au complet.
« Oui, je pense que j’ai réussi à aller dans ces deux pôles. » Joe Grass a eu l’intelligence de la suivre dans cette émotion et, surtout, de la capter sans la surjouer. L’interprétation d’Elisapie est émouvante de douceur et de sobriété, sa voix mise très en avant dans un enrobage qui respecte l’essence des pièces originales, avec juste assez de distorsion pour évoquer le domaine du souvenir.
« Ce projet, il fallait le garder humble, le plus simple possible. Joe me disait que c’est là que ça marche, quand je n’essaie pas de réinterpréter, quand je suis le plus moi-même. »
Rayonnement
Une fois la décision prise de consacrer temps et énergie à faire un vrai album, il a fallu obtenir les droits pour tous ces immenses classiques. Une personne a été engagée pour présenter les demandes auprès des éditeurs, une tâche de longue haleine.

« Elle nous a dit : “Donnez-moi un an.” » Metallica, Queen, les Rolling Stones et Fleetwood Mac ont rapidement donné leur accord. « Quand on a vu ça, on a dit : ok c’est bon ! » Y a-t-il eu des refus ? « Oui, Abba. C’est dommage, on avait une version complètement pétée de Chiquitita. Ma fille ne les écoute plus à cause de ça ! » Mais presque toutes les demandes ont fini par fonctionner, même in extremis avec les duos plus compliqués, Robert Plant et Jimmy Page de Led Zeppelin, et Roger Waters et David Gilmour de Pink Floyd.
Elisapie ne sait pas ce qui a intéressé les artistes dans son « petit projet de rien » par rapport à l’ampleur de leur œuvre. « Peut-être qu’ils ont vu que c’était en langue autochtone et qu’ils ont trouvé ça spécial. Mon rêve était que tous les artistes l’écoutent et m’écrivent ! »
Ce n’est pas arrivé, mais des extraits lancés depuis quelques mois ont eu pas mal de rayonnement. Debbie Harry de Blondie et le groupe Metallica ont partagé sur leurs réseaux sociaux ses émouvantes et lancinantes versions de Heart of Glass et The Unforgiven, dont le prestigieux magazine Rolling Stone a aussi fait écho.
« On a trouvé quelqu’un pour passer l’album à Robert Plant lorsqu’il est venu en spectacle à Montréal cet été. Je ne sais pas s’il va l’écouter, mais bon… » Elle est en tout cas ravie de voir que des artistes reconnus se laissent encore toucher par d’autres artistes.
Je ne rends pas hommage juste à ma langue, je leur rends hommage aussi [aux artistes]. I talk about how they were friends to us. It’s a declaration of love.

Exorcise sadness
Elisapie readily admits that she cried a lot during the making of the album. Now that she’s going on tour, we hope she doesn’t put herself in this state at every show. ” No not at all ! I presented it at the FME in Abitibi, and honestly, it was a joy. »
The singer loved seeing people dance and sing, their looks, their smile. “There was also emotion, people crying because I tell the stories behind the songs. I feel like it’s me watching a show seeing them react! Being their mirror was also the goal. »
At the end of the process, Elisapie does not know if she has exorcised all her pain. “Some of it maybe… but maybe there are others?” ” She laughs. “I think I realized I had some stuff stuck in my body. » But she also encourages everyone to “not hide from sadness”.
It’s beautiful to be sad. It’s just another emotion and I encourage people to go into tears. Right after that we can laugh, but laugh for real. It’s going to be loaded in another way.

If the album obviously has international potential, Elisapie does not know which direction it will take, towards France, where she already has a loyal audience, or the United States, which is starting to discover her. “We don’t know how the cards will play out. But we can already see that it is causing a lot of reaction among North Americans. »
In addition to the tour which is starting in Quebec for at least a year, she will soon be promoting in France, then “an interesting showcase ” in the USA. What would she like for her album?
“I hope it will bring emotions to life. I would love to do a big festival in the States, that’s for sure. But I can be impatient in life, so I try to be without expectations, take it step by step and have confidence. Just to give it a soul, a spirit. Send him some witchcraft. »
