Interns in general medicine will have an additional year of training, paid “up to 4,500 euros per month”

It was a campaign promise from Emmanuel Macron, voted in the last Social Security budget. Residents in general medicine, so far trained in three years, will in future have to complete an additional year “in a doctor’s office”, which can be paid “up to 4,500 euros net per month”, announced the Minister of Health, François Braun, Monday, June 12. This measure will concern future general practitioners who will begin their internship in September, and therefore their fourth year in the fall of 2026. The Minister of Health made this announcement one week before “national ranking tests” which will determine the choices (specialty and city) of future interns.

This additional year will not be “not just another year”, assured François Braun in a speech delivered on this occasion. She will understand “two six-month internships” carried out, with some exceptions, “in the same doctor’s office”, with compulsory participation in the “constant care” evenings and weekends. “Thus, in addition to the classic remuneration of a junior doctor, general medicine interns will receive 20% of the remuneration for acts carried out during their 4th year in supervised autonomy (with a floor of 10 consultations and a ceiling of 30 consultations per day )”the government said in a statement.

“Additional Indemnity” in Medical Deserts

This remuneration based on fee-for-service also aims to encourage students to set up as a freelancer after obtaining their diploma. Those who choose to practice in a medical desert “will receive additional compensation”, added Francois Braun. The minister also announced that this reform is aimed both at “strengthening of the specialty of general medicine” And “access to health in the territories”.

In total, the system should concern 3,600 interns per year. On condition, however, of finding internship supervisors to host them: the Minister has therefore set a target of 16,000 practitioners trained at the end of 2026, against 13,000 currently, in order to be “at the height of the need”.
