For International Women’s Rights Day on March 8, there were numerous demonstrations across the world. In Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Poland, women’s demands are multiple.

In Afghanistan, women have been completely suppressed from public spaces since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Some continue to fight for their rights, but in private spaces, under fear of repression. In Karachi (Pakistan), women are trying to assert their place in the streets. A group learns to ride motorcycles: a rare scene in this conservative country. “If women can take care of the responsibilities of the home and earn a living, why can’t they ride a motorcycle?” asks Sana Kamran, member of “Rowdy riders”.

The Polish government questioned

In Europe too, numerous mobilizations took place to celebrate International Women’s Rights Day: this is particularly the case in Warsaw, Poland. The demonstrators are calling on the country’s new government and demanding more rights, in a country where access to abortion is one of the most restricted in Europe.
