Inter Miami 2 – CF Montreal 0 | CF Montreal starts its season with a loss

CF Montreal created several good chances. CF Montreal gave several good chances. But in the end, his lack of opportunism and the brilliance of the opposing goalkeeper led to his loss in his first game of the season.

The Hernán Losada era therefore began with a 2-0 loss against Inter Miami on Saturday night.

Sunusi Ibrahim, Romell Quioto, Aaron Herrera and especially Lassi Lappalainen all had chances in the penalty area, but Drake Callender was imperial in front of the home side’s goal.

Losada had promised vertical and attacking play. And it is with this philosophy that the Bleu-blanc-noir fell.

The CFM started the duel by applying a lot of pressure. This notably allowed Ibrahim to take a low shot in the area at the start of the first half, but without success.

In addition to a few more interesting moments, the second part of the first half was the affair of Miami, which was able to impose itself in the rather messy game on both sides. CFM attempted to be more vertical as Losada wished, but the balls found few takers and David Beckham’s side secured possession for that segment of the game.

And the flamingos took advantage of this good sequence. They rattled the ropes following a corner kick with four minutes left at the half through the hip of defender Serhiy Kryvtsov.

The second half saw CFM take matters into their own hands, but their lack of lucidity in the final third came to haunt them.

After a typical MLS sequence, where the ball hit the post and then was cleared by Samuel Piette on the goal line, Shanyder Borgelin allowed his team to double the lead at 76e minute and that was the end of the beans.

However, Losada’s men were not at the end of their sentence.

With ten minutes to go, CFM goalkeeper James Pantemis suffered heavy contact with Brazilian midfielder Gregore. The Quebecer was starting a season for the first time as an undisputed starter. In relief, his compatriot Jonathan Sirois did not flinch.

The first minutes of Nathan Saliba

Quebec midfielder Nathan Saliba not only made his first start in MLS, but got his first minutes as a professional player. His performance was limited to 45 minutes, as Losada removed him before the start of the second period of play.

Trailing at this point, Losada preferred to send Mathieu Choinière into the fray, a player with a more attacking profile.

Central defender Joel Waterman missed the match with a so-called “minor” injury by Losada. He was replaced by Herrera in the three-man defense, which allowed Brault-Guillard to get a start. The Quebec defender managed several quality crosses for his teammates, but which did not find the back of the net.

The CFM has also missed an opportunity to set an MLS record if it obtained an eighth consecutive victory on the road. The 2022 edition ended the season with seven straight wins abroad.
