Those interested in the news will no doubt have noticed that an artificial intelligence race is underway in academia and industry. But is it really about intelligence?
Intelligence is our link with reality. It is the logical process (reason and emotions) by which we apprehend the main dimensions of the real (eg, the physical, the living, the social). Moreover, our ability to adapt to our habitat depends on it, our first task actually being to adapt well in order to survive and ultimately hope to live in balance with the world around us.
We must therefore seek to know the latter as perfectly as possible to avoid our ignorance irremediably leading to its deterioration or, at worst, its destruction.
The continued growth of the world population also urgently calls for all the intelligence that can be mobilized. Artificial intelligence is only one way, although powerful, to accelerate the acquisition of new knowledge about our condition.
Once again, it is essential to apply our (natural) intelligence to know our habitat perfectly and to remember the mistakes that have alienated us from it.
