Municipalities are now exposed to bad weather and the risk of urban violence. So, some insurers are turning away from these municipalities. In Meurthe-et-Moselle, a city councilor says he is “at the bottom of the hole”.

In Mont-Saint-Martin (Meurthe-et-Moselle)a small, very popular town of 8,500 inhabitants, the town hall still bears some traces of the riots of last June. The city suffered very heavy damage. The town hall, a school and an autism center were burned down. Today, the work is being completed, but the mayor’s worry is that he will not be able to finance it. The total bill amounts to 2.5 million euros. For the moment, the insurance has only advanced 50,000 euros.

An insurance concern

Two weeks ago, the mayor learned that the insurer was going to terminate all current contracts. From January 1, the city’s buildings and automobile fleet will no longer be insured. “It’s another blow to the head. We feel like we’re at the bottom of the hole. We did what we had to do […] we will be more assured of it. It’s the triple punishment.”deplores the councilor, Serge Of Carly. To urgently find a new insurer, the city is seeking help from a specialist in the sector, but the prospects are poor. Similar cases are multiplying in France.
