Some French people have a higher energy bill than others, such as those who live in poorly insulated housing.
In the countryside, old houses are often poorly insulated. They are the stuff of dreams, but they can strain the budget. It is not impossible that they sometimes become a financial hole. In the Nièvre, in Marigny-sur-Yonne, Serge Paris’ house is a thermal strainer. Doors, windows and attics are not very well insulated. It lets a lot of the heat escape. On arrival, the bill is difficult to bear: 2,500 euros for fuel oil and 500 for electricity. “It’s too much for me, it’s really hard“, deplores Serge Paris.
A relative helps him to put together a file for grants that would cover the cost of the work, which amounts to more than 30,000 euros. But the subsidies would not be enough. In the Nièvre, more than one in two homes has a thermal strainer, three times more than the French average. In Nevers (Nièvre), the owner of a 150 square meter house, electrically heated, has the attic insulated. Usual consumption is around 2,000 euros of electricity per year. With the insulation of its attic, it could earn 15% on its next bill.
