Daniel Theis has embarked on a new journey in European basketball, leaving the NBA after a turbulent experience with multiple teams. He joined AS Monaco in the EuroLeague, aiming for a Final Four spot and the championship title. In an interview, he highlighted the challenges of the NBA’s business side and expressed excitement about the physical play and teamwork in Europe, looking forward to contributing significantly to his new team’s success.
Daniel Theis: A New Chapter in European Basketball
The last few years have been remarkable for basketball player Daniel Theis. He played a pivotal role in securing World Cup gold with the national team, among other accolades. However, his journey in the NBA was challenging, as he struggled to find a team that would commit to him long-term. Now, he has made the bold decision to return to Europe and showcase his talents with AS Monaco in the EuroLeague.
The Decision to Leave the NBA
In a recent interview, Theis reflected on his transition from the NBA to European basketball, emphasizing that it was less about turning his back on the NBA and more about prioritizing his personal and professional journey. “The business of the NBA can be overwhelming,” he explained. “With constant trades and relocations, it’s especially tough for those with families. Uprooting everything and moving to a new city is a complex process, particularly when kids are involved.”
Looking back on his time in the NBA, Theis described it as “turbulent,” having played for six different teams over five seasons. The frequent trades led him to question his worth in the league. “I realized I needed to focus entirely on my game rather than worry about the next trade,” he said, highlighting the mental strain that came with the business side of basketball.
Despite receiving offers to remain in the NBA, including a potential opportunity with the New York Knicks, Theis chose to embrace a new challenge in Monaco. “I could have stayed, but I didn’t want to find myself in the same situation next summer,” he noted.
Aiming for the EuroLeague Title
Currently, AS Monaco is ranked 4th in the EuroLeague, and Theis has set ambitious goals for the season. “Personally, I strive to reach the Final Four. We have a strong team, including top scorer Mike James and coaching legend Vasilios Spanoulis. Competing for the EuroLeague title is our ultimate aim,” he stated, hinting at the possibility of facing Bayern in the playoffs.
When discussing the differences between European and NBA basketball, Theis pointed out that the physicality in European play is more pronounced. “Defensively, players can be more aggressive, and not every foul is called. The superstars in the NBA have their advantages, but I hope that in the EuroLeague, it’s more balanced,” he elaborated.
He also expressed excitement about being more involved in the offense in Europe. “In the NBA, the focus is often on individual stars, but here, teamwork is key. I look forward to contributing beyond just scoring, making plays, and being an integral part of the offense,” he explained.
As the basketball world continues to shift, Theis remains optimistic about his career path. While the NBA remains an open chapter, he is currently thrilled to be part of the AS Monaco team and eager for what the future holds in European basketball.
