Night falls on the Giza plateau and our virtual expedition begins at the foot of the pyramid. A young guide, an avatar, takes us into the entrails of the last resting place of Cheops, the pharaoh who would have lived around 2600 BC. Then in the form of an Egyptian cat, a goddess takes over the visit: “Fear not, visitor. Start by approaching my sacred aura to initiate your journey and bow to the greatness of Cheops and its people.”
In the cramped galleries, we wander, we move on platforms of flying stones to understand the prowess of this construction. “The horizon of Cheops”, it’s three years of development for 45 minutes of stunning, very realistic experience. So much so that we would like to touch the walls.
For Maxime Gagneur, project manager at Emissive, the company that developed the experience, virtual reality makes it possible to understand cultural visits in a different way and also to visit places prohibited to the public in reality. Among the highlights, access to the king’s burial chamber or the spectacular view from the top of the pyramid. A tip, prone to dizziness, be careful.
“The Horizon of Cheops, a journey in ancient Egypt” at the Arab World Institute until October 2.
