The unemployment rate in France stabilized at 7.5% of the active population in the first quarter. According to INSEE, 6,000 additional unemployed people were registered between January and March. But the highlight of INSEE’s announcements is the employment rate of seniors (50-64 years old). It increased over one year by 1.2 points to reach 68%, its highest level since 1975.
Nathalie Chusseau, professor at the University of Lille, specifies in Informés de l’Eco on France Info, that the lowest employment rate is observed in the 60-64 age group. This result is explained in particular by the increase in the employment rate, which went from 68.5% to 68.8%. The increase is two points compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, before the health crisis.
It is moderate for 15-24 year olds, whose employment rate increases from 35.1% to 35.3%, for 25-49 year olds (82.4% to 82.5%), higher among 50 -64 years old, among whom it goes from 67.2% to 67.7%. This increase is also explained by the increase in the retirement age.
