(New York) 2020 U.S. Open runner-up Alexander Zverev will miss this year’s tournament as he recovers from surgery on his right ankle.

Zverev tore ankle ligaments in his semi-final match against Rafael Nadal at the French Open in June. The noh 2 World has confirmed its package for the New York tournament on Monday.

The 25-year-old German was on the verge of winning his maiden Grand Slam title two years ago at Flushing Meadows when Dominic Thiem came from behind to defeat him in the fifth-set tiebreaker. It was the first time a male player had erased a 2-0 deficit in the final since Pancho Gonzalez’s triumph over Ted Schroeder in 1949.

Zverev won Olympic gold in Tokyo last year and then lost in the US Open semi-finals to Novak Djokovic.

American Stefan Kozlov has inherited the place in the main draw of the tournament, which gets under way next Monday.

Reilly Opelka, who won two titles earlier this year, also withdrew due to injury. He qualified for the fourth round of the tournament last year. American Jack Sock took his place in the main draw.
