Former FARC hostage Ingrid Betancourt has announced her intention to take part in the presidential election in Colombia, a country still plagued by drug trafficking and corruption.
She is the icon of the fight against the FARC in Colombia. Ingrid Betancourt, head of the ecologist party Vert Oxygène, is running again in the Colombian presidential election, in a country still plagued by violence. “I’m here to finish what I started with you in 2002, she said. I am convinced that Colombia is ready to change the course of its history.”
Exactly 20 years ago, while campaigning, the Franco-Colombian was kidnapped by an armed Marxist group. In France, the release of Ingrid Betancourt becomes a matter of state, demanded in the streets during huge rallies. The singer Renaud even wrote him a piece, “Dans la jungle”. The hostage was only released six years later, in 2008, after a military operation led by the Colombian army. Today, Ingrid Betancourt is participating in a primary organized by a centrist coalition. The presidential election will take place in May and June 2022.
