INFOGRAPHICS. Mozzarella, pastis and crisps… These star holiday products whose prices are skyrocketing

With galloping inflation for a year, there is one certainty: your summer holidays in 2023 will cost you more than in 2022. Sunscreen and rosé, tabbouleh and merguez… franceinfo looks at the inflation of your summer shopping.

The summer of 2023 is one of strong increases. Nothing too surprising after 18 months of inflation, but it will weigh on the wallets of those who can go on vacation. In supermarkets, all the summer staples, from mosquito repellent to mozzarella, from tabbouleh to pastis, are on the rise. Overview of inflation at the dawn of the summer holidays.

>> INFOGRAPHICS. Tolls, trains, planes… In one year, the prices of transport for the summer holidays have exploded

If in recent weeks, prices have started to stabilize, as we revealed during the 8th edition of the franceinfo basket, they are doing so on a high plateau. At the start of the holidays, in partnership with NielsenIQ and France Bleu, we have analyzed the prices of 25 star products of the summer season. Emmanuel Fournet, Analytical Director at NiselenIQ, announces the color: “The races are more expensive this year, so the summer races will not be an exception to this rule.

Food prices up sharply

On average, prices increased by 12% between June 2022 and June 2023. On our receipt, this brings a notable difference: these 25 products now cost 122.35 euros. That’s ten more than a year ago. And this average hides great disparities. Mozzarella is the product that increases the most in proportion (nearly 30% increase). Consequence on the shelves: a packet of mozzarella sells for 28 cents more. “It’s not a surprise, because everything that goes into its composition has increased very strongly”recalls Emmanuel Fournet.

>> INFOGRAPHICS. Inflation: department by department, where have prices increased the most over the past year?

In fact, food products have increased the most. “These are the products that required an animal to be fed and raised to obtain the final product. For 18 months, with the increase in the cost of cereals, feeding the animal has cost much more than in 2021”explains the expert. “This is the case of cheese, such as mozzarella, or sausage, the second product to have increased the most in this basket”he explains.

Then come crisps, peanuts, surimi, ice cream and tuna. On the labels, the impact is just as significant: +78 cents on a pack of 8 ice cream sticks, +84 cents on a pack of surimi, +68 cents for a can of tuna. These two products, very popular with consumers for mixed salads, are suffering from price increases on fuel, essential for going out to sea to fish, but also to transport the raw material from the port to the factory. In addition to this, the surimi also pays for its energy-intensive processing method, as well as its overwrapping, two or three coats that add more” at final price .

The more expensive aperitif, the price of sunscreen jumps

The aperitif stars are no exception to this trend. On your ticket, you pay on average for a bottle of rosé nearly 50 cents more than last year. Ditto for a bottle of pastis. And the flavored beer pack costs more than €1.50 more than in June 2022.

Hygiene and beauty products increased the least in proportion, a result consistent with our analysis of department-by-department inflation. They are mainly affected by increases in packaging. But on the labels, the deviations can be particularly large. A tube of sunscreen thus sells for one euro more expensive than last summer, an anti-mosquito spray 27 cents more. Finally, it is condoms – which do indeed experience a peak in consumption during the summer season – which have increased the least: 10 cents more in one year, ie an inflation of 1.3%.
