President Emmanuel Macron and actor Gérard Depardieu spoke on the phone a few days ago, franceinfo learned on Thursday, December 21. This telephone exchange therefore took place before Emmanuel Macron defended the actor this Wednesday in the show “C à vous” on France 5.
Emmanuel Macron notably denounced a “manhunt” against Gérard Depardieu after the broadcast of a report in the magazine “Complément d’investigation” on the film star, disavowing his Minister of Culture who questioned the actor’s Legion of Honor. “One thing you will never see me in is manhunts. I hate it.”launched the President of the Republic.
Gérard Depardieu is notably targeted by two complaints in France for rape and sexual assault, and indicted in one of the two cases. He refutes these accusations.
“He makes France proud”
The President of the Republic said “great admirer of Gérard Depardieu (…) A huge actor”. “He made France, our great authors, our great characters known throughout the world […] He makes France proud”, continued Emmanuel Macron, taking the opposite view from the Minister of Culture. Rima Abdul Malak had estimated for her part that the actor’s comments reported in the magazine “Complément d’investigation” made “shame on France”.
In these images, broadcast on France 2 at the beginning of December, the French cinema giant multiplies misogynistic and insulting remarks while addressing women, not sparing a little girl with his obscene remarks. Emmanuel Macron ruled on Wednesday that Rima Abdul Malak “advanced” speaking of a procedure which could remove the distinction of the actor. These comments caused a strong reaction on the left and in women’s defense associations.
