The government is preparing a decree to force manufacturers of periodic protection to indicate the composition of their products, reveal Thursday, March 10 France Inter and Liberation. The objective is to answer a question of “public and environmental health”, indicates the Minister of Health to France Inter. Olivier Véran would like manufacturers in the sector to include the exact list on the packaging of their products “everything that makes up tampons, sanitary napkins and menstrual cups”. The text must be negotiated with the manufacturers, for an application scheduled for January 1, 2023.

In a report, published three years ago, the National Health Security Agency (Anses) identified a number of toxic substances in tampons and sanitary napkins. “You can find glyphosate, which comes from cotton, depending on how it was grown”, indicates Maud Leblon, director of the association Rules Elementary, contacted by France Inter. She also points to products “which can cause irritation, inflammation, redness”.

According to Olivier Véran, this obligation of transparency will encourage manufacturers to improve the composition of their protections themselves, like the implementation of the nutriscore in the field of food. “It had worked and the behavior of the manufacturers has changed. They have reduced the sugar in the sodas, reduced the salt in the ham… I am convinced that we will also arrive at virtuous behavior on the part of manufacturers of sanitary protection “says the Minister of Health to France Inter.
