Influencer Laura Pétard meets young people to encourage them to vote

We can be very critical on social networks but we cannot blame them for not mobilizing to encourage young people to vote in two months. Lhe Minister Delegate for Citizenship, Marlène Schiappa, moreover encouraged them in this direction: end December, she had summoned the main social networks and the video platform YouTube to talk about the campaign and asked them to find ways to encourage young people to register on the electoral rolls and go to vote for president.

Instagram is behind this project Does it vote?, carried out in partnership with the social media Konbini, which managed the image of this concept based on vox pops. To target different groups among 18-25 year olds, these media have called on four influencers: Vargasss (1.4 million subscribers on Instagram), Crazy Sally (639,000), Alexandre Gigow (541,000) and Laura Petard ( 428,000 subscribers). Each of them goes to meet young people in four different cities, namely Marseille, Dunkirk, Strasbourg and Montpellier.

The objective consists in filming these exchanges during which it is question of the vote, its importance, but also the practical methods to be registered on the electoral lists. These videos are available in the form of stories and Reels (short videos that can easily be shared on Instagram).

Fighting abstentionism among 18-30 year olds is the objective of this project. Because the polls show that half of those under 30 do not think of going to vote in the presidential election. When Laura Pétard asks a young Montpellier girl if she feels her vote counts, the latter replies no, adding that “he’s not interested”. But others seem more involved, at least this is the feeling of Laura Pétard.

Young people are interested in politics, I saw it while carrying out this project.

Laura Pétard is therefore one of the four content creators selected for this project. At 26, the native of Montpellier has 420,000 subscribers on Instagram, nearly 800,000 on Tik tok. The young woman made a name for herself three years ago by accidentally starting to take hidden cameras from her car. Filmed from a low angle, we see her asking passers-by for itineraries or crazy places (the reproduction center or the congress of the testicle…).

Laura – whose real last name is Petard, as she often points out – passed a secretarial baccalaureate before living off odd jobs. Her somewhat cash humour, her accent which she does not try to hide and her nerve have contributed to her success. For the project Does it vote? she put on a more “serious” costume in which she says she felt very comfortable.

Until February 26, one video per week will be posted on the influencers’ account and on Konbini’s, which is followed by 2.3 million people.
