Sources in the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) and the New Democratic Party (NDP) told The Canadian Press that the plan involves doubling GST refund checks for six months. It also provides a temporary dental benefit for certain families with young children and an enhanced housing allowance.

These are three initiatives by the NDP, which has been calling for these measures since last spring, when inflation began to weigh heavily on the shoulders of low- and modest-income Canadians.

The dental and housing allowances also meet the demands made by the NDP under the Liberal-NDP agreement reached last March, ensuring the survival of the minority Liberal government in exchange for the NDP’s vote of confidence.

The announcement was due to take place last week during the Cabinet retreat in Vancouver, but was delayed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Mr. Trudeau is therefore set to release all the details on Tuesday in the midst of the Liberal caucus retreat in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.
