The annual pace of inflation rose in April as the cost of almost everything at the grocery store continued to climb, Statistics Canada noted on Wednesday.
The agency says its consumer price index for April rose 6.8% from a year ago, up from the 6.7% gain posted in March.
The rate is the highest since January 1991, when it reached 6.9%.
Excluding gas, inflation in April was 5.8%, compared to 5.5% in March.
The April results came as Canadians paid 9.7% more for food purchased at grocery stores in April compared to a year ago, the biggest increase since September 1981.
Compared to the same period last year, the cost of fresh fruit increased by 10%, that of fresh vegetables by 8.2% and that of meat by 10.1%. The cost of bread increased by 12.2%, while pasta increased by 19.6% and rice by 7.4%.
