Three people were fatally shot and two were injured at a shopping mall in Indiana, United States, on Sunday night after a man with a gun opened fire in a food court and a civilian gunman killed him, police said.
The man entered the Greenwood Park mall with a rifle and multiple rounds of ammunition and began shooting into the food court, Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said.
An armed civilian killed the man, Ison told a news conference. A total of four people were killed and two were injured, he said.
Officers attended the mall around 6 p.m. after reports of a shooting. Authorities are looking for other victims in the mall, but they believe the shooting was limited to the food court.
Police confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Mr Ison said.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and several other agencies are participating in the investigation.
“We are disgusted by another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Police Deputy Chief Chris Bailey said.
There is no active threat in the area, Bailey added.
Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of approximately 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers for the victims and our first responders.”
“This tragedy strikes at the heart of our community,” the mayor said in a statement.
