The latter, who were pre-game favorites as the eighth seed, lost 7-6(4), 6-4 in just under an hour and 30 minutes.

Both Bopanna and Shapovalov were imperial on serve, winning 72% of rallies when they put the ball in play on one attempt. It was all the better when they needed a second serve, not dropping a single point in the game under those circumstances.

In the round of 16, the Canadian and the Indian will face Santiago Gonzalez and Édouard Roger-Vasselin.

Recall that Shapovalov received a bye to the first round in singles in Indian Wells and will face Reilly Opelka in the round of 16.
