A 44-year-old woman whose days are numbered due to an incurable illness has spent the last year pursuing her dreams, refusing to watch her life “fly by the window.”

“Without sparing my words, I would say that I had the best year of my life. I put rose-colored glasses on my face and fastened them with brooches!” says France Girard laughing.

Suffering from a rare form of leukemia, the 44-year-old woman told her story to Newspaper in October 2022, while she was undergoing a new treatment which was expected to extend her life by more or less 9 months.

Defying all odds, Mme Girard continues to live fully, 15 months later. But the fairy tale is soon coming to an end, even though the medicine has stopped working for a few days.

With no other option, the woman from Quebec therefore agreed to be part of the first phase of clinical trials for a new drug that could potentially help people in her situation fight the disease.

Like an “old grandfather”

Mme Girard remains well aware that she risks leaving this world before halfway through 2024, barring a miracle, but that doesn’t mean she feels sorry for herself.

In fact, she plans to live her final moments the way she lived the entire last year: at 100 miles an hour.

Travels to the four corners of the globe, skydiving, gigantic party with friends, surfing retreat, organization of a concert with a singer she adores… France Girard has taken advantage of the last few months to realize many of her dreams. had on his bucket list.

During her trip to Morocco in December 2023, she was able to ride horses on the beach with her family.

“For me, that’s not what living is. I transformed my constraints into opportunities,” she adds.

A storm on the horizon

Even though the next few weeks will be punctuated by numerous hospital visits due to his new experimental treatment, Mme Girard will try to make the most of each day.

“It’s no secret there’s a big storm coming. But I don’t fear death. I’m more afraid of not taking the time to take the time,” she explains.

She also plans to return one last time to Australia, where she and her partner fell in love for the first time.
