‘Increased risk of attacks’ | Canada urges people to avoid travel to Israel

The Government of Canada is asking its citizens to avoid all travel to Israel due to “increased risk of attacks.”

“The situation in Israel remains volatile and unpredictable due to the violence and escalating clashes between Israel and Lebanon-based terrorists. […]”These attacks are linked to the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip and could lead to an escalation of hostilities in Israel,” the Canadian government wrote on its website.

The ongoing conflict poses a significant security risk, “even if you’re not close to the front lines,” Ottawa says. Attacks can also disrupt air travel.

The government is recommending that Canadians who are in Israel despite the advisory avoid all travel within 5 km of the border with Lebanon, monitor the media for updates and identify the location of the nearest bomb shelter. If there is none, citizens should take shelter in a solid structure away from windows when air raid sirens are activated.

Canada also recommends that travellers follow the instructions of local authorities, regarding air raid sirens and evacuation orders, and download an alert app to receive detailed information and instructions, such as Home Front Command.

Ottawa is also discouraging Canadians from travelling to the Gaza Strip, where the situation is “extremely dangerous.” It says its ability to provide consular services to Canadians in the region is extremely limited. The Canadian government is also asking its citizens to avoid the West Bank, where “tensions and violence remain high.”
