School canteen prices are increasing in some municipalities, due to rising food prices. Some town halls have passed on the costs, others have adapted the menus.

Food and meals are increasingly expensive in school canteens. In a school near Lyon (Rhône), in L’Arbresle, prices increased by 10% in March and a comparable increase is planned for 2023. The supplier was forced to raise its prices. The group that delivers prepared meals mentions an increase in the price of agricultural commodities and energy.

The municipality pays for a small part of it, but has had to pass on most of it to the price paid by the families: 20 to 50 centimes extra per meal, depending on the parents’ income. According to the Association of Mayors of France, municipalities across France are facing requests from suppliers to increase the price of meals by 5% to 10%. Parents are worried. To cope, some suppliers adapt menus or choose cheaper ingredients.
