According to their union, the majority of the 11,000 rural and suburban mail carriers who work for Canada Post must use their own vehicle to deliver the mail.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) demands that they be compensated for the increase in the price of gasoline in recent months.

Their compensation for mileage is based on the maximum non-taxable vehicle allowance rate set by the Canada Revenue Agency.

If these rural and suburban mail carriers receive an allowance above this maximum rate, all allowances related to the use of their vehicle then become taxable, explains the union.

According to the union, the only way to increase the income these letter carriers have to pay for gasoline is to convince the federal government to raise this ceiling.
